A Thousand Splendid Suns Spoilers

I cried a lot, but the two worst were when they took Aziza to the orphanage and when Mariam was killed. I sobbed at the first. The idea of taking my child to an orphanage because I could no longer feed them just breaks my heart. (also, when Tariq first left, at the train station, several of the beatings, when Laila left Mariam.)

Then, when she wanted to go back to Kabul! I could understand why, but at the same time WHY?? Get out, how do you know it'll remain safe?

I also wanted her to have some trinket of Mariam's to keep, but there was nothing and it made me sad.

Last, Laila and Mariam are both on my short list of girl names, should we ever have another kid (and it be a girl). Cool that they are both in the same book here.

I didn't cry, but I still feel depressed from reading it.

This was my first experience with an audio book (very long car ride), and I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had actually read the book myself, but it was still a great book.

We take so much for granted, don't we? For so many people, oppression is just a way of life.

They took such a risk at the train station. As soon as it was obvious that the guy had duped them, I wanted to will them to run hard and fast and just get out of there. I was so afraid of what would happen when they got home, but I think the punishment they received was even worse than I had imagined.

I hated the way Rasheed used Laila's little girl to punish Laila--especially the scene after the bus station and when he would refuse to escort her to the orphanage.

I wanted them to poison him and make it look like he died from natural causes, but then they would have had NO male relatives to escort them anywhere. Such a tough situation.

I cried during that punishment, for Laila's emotions about what was happening to the little girl. I think the idea of losing my child is the worst possible thing.
